Nick Knowles gets Original Features
Filming at IBS Reclaim 2011
Buckinghamshire, UK - A BBC crew filming a new series of 'Original Features' arrived on location at IBS Reclaim on the 8th June with the owners of a Georgian house in Wallingford who were restoring a home which had been in use to accommodate staff from a nearby hotel.

The original doors were missing having been replaced by modern day fire doors due to building regulations. During filming IBS Reclaim offered a very distressed six panel door that was beyond reuse, due to water ingress and plenty of cracks. Presenter Nick Knowles of DIY S.O.S fame said that, although some die hard fans would reuse the door, there would be plenty of work involved and it would be a labour of love to restore it.

The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Mason, required eighteen matching doors of varying sizes. Nick discussed the fact that finding suitable doors could be time consuming and then moved towards the display of new made-to-measure doors available from IBS Reclaim crafted from reclaimed timber.

Nick was keen to stress this may be a good option for both timescale and continuity and he put great emphasis on the green issue here, whilst he made reference to imported timbers from such places as Russia and the carbon footprint in getting these to the UK, he went on to talk about the other benefits of mature stable timber.

Filming then turned to fireplaces as the Masons had a requirement for several of these. Again several originals were viewed. Nick discussed the benefits of original features, however he was absorbed by the budget prices of the large display of replica fireplaces and commented several times about the price and quality of the replica alternative.

The series of ten programmes will air from October 2011. During each episode researchers also try to discover the hidden history of each property, presenting the owners with a book of that history. Researchers also source materials, specialists and suppliers to assist the home owners with their projects.
